Introduction

Any endeavour, whether conducted at the individual, group, community or country level, would not be achievable without the use of language. This is inevitable because language has the ability to affect or influence a situation or context, particularly in terms of the connections between two, or more, parties or participants taking part in the endeavour mentioned earlier.  The success or failure in achieving the desired outcome of any activity rests primarily on the ability to use language effectively.

Language, be it written in print, or on screen in emails, or verbal in face to face communication or through the telephone or video conferencing, requires a real connection between the parties involved.  Each of the parties must be able to “read” the character and the needs of his or her conversational partner.  Should what is written or uttered contain words which appear to cause offense or discomfort, particularly in cases where those words have not been appropriately used, neither connection nor interaction which could further the cause of the endeavour would thus be established.
