Dr Stephen Druce gives talk at South Sulawesi universities
September 2019 | In September 2019, Dr Stephen Druce was in Makassar, Indonesia, where he was invited to give talks at a number of universities, such as Universitas Hasanuddin (Hasanuddin University) and Universitas Negeri Makassar (State University of Makassar). The talks focused on how to use, understand and interpret various archaeological, textual, oral, linguistic and geographical sources and data to write pre-modern history with specific examples taken from South Sulawesi. The talks attracted audiences of over 300 people.

Dr Haji Tassim presents a working paper at Majlis Ilmu 2019
October 14, 2019 | Dr. Haji Tassim bin Haji Abu Bakar, Senior Assistant Professor and Director of the Academy of Brunei Studies, presented a working paper entitled 'Hukum Kanun Brunei Hubungannya Dengan Konsep Melayu Islam Beraja'. In this paper Dr Haji Tassim discussed the Brunei Law Act in relation to the concept of the Malay Islamic Monarchy, and documented the laws that existed in the traditional Brunei Sultanate before the advent of British administration in 1906.

Abdul Hai attends the ASEAN-Korea Train: Advancing Together held at Seoul 2019
October 15-19, 2019 | Abdul Hai Julay attended by invitation the ASEAN-Korea Train: Advancing Together held at Seoul 2019 is a program that marked the 30th Anniversary of the ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations, organised by the ASEAN-Korea Center and hosted by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Alongside Abdul Hai, were a further eleven participants from Brunei Darussalam that included the Deputy Minister, the Brunei Ambassador in Seoul, the First Secretary to the ambassador government officers, Brunei entrepreneurs, and journalists. The program included several activities, such as the KBS Open Concert, a visit to Busan cultural sites, such as Gyeongju-Bulguksa Temple and Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve. There was also an in-train performances by ASEAN artists.

Professor OOI Keat Gin's 5 day visit to the Academy of Brunei Studies
December 10-12, 2019 | Professor Ooi Keat Gin spent 5 days at the Academy of Brunei Studies as a Visiting Professor. This was Professor Ooi’s fourth visit to the Academy in recent years. On this occasion Professor Ooi gave a two seminar talks. The first was entitled ‘The Cold War in Malaysia, A Longer Trajectory, c. 1920s-1900s’ and the second ‘Borneo and Sulawesi: Indigenous Peoples, Empires and Area Studies'. Professor Ooi also held discussions with UBD Academic staff regarding preparations for the publication of the results from the Academy of Brunei Studies ‘Brunei Compendium Project’ that will be published by Routledge in their prestigious handbook series as the Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Brunei.

September 23, 2019 | Director of Academy of Brunei Studies, Dr Haji Tassim bin Haji Abu Bakar, was the guest of honour for the Inter-Faculty Staff Futsal Championship in conjunction with the 2019 Convocation Festival.

October 5, 2019 | Three Academy of Brunei Studies final year undergraduate students taking module PB-4301 (Project 1) under the supervision of Pg Dr Khairul Rijal Pg Haji Abdul Rahim organised an Entrepreneurship Bazaar.

The Academy of Brunei Studies launched mentorship programme
October 23, 2019 | Academy of Brunei Studies Mentorship program was launched by Dr. Haji Tassim bin Haji Abu Bakar, Director Academy of Brunei Studies. The mentorship programme aims to provide personal academic support and advice to all of the Academy’s undergraduate students throughout their 4-year degree.

Academy of Brunei Studies students attend the 7th ASEAN Traditional Textile Symposium, Yogyakarta
November 4-8, 2019 | The 7th ASEAN Traditional Textile Symposium (ATTS) was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from 4-8 November 2019. Dk Nurul Faten, a graduate student from the Academy of Brunei Studies, presented a paper at the symposium titled, 'Preserving Woven Textiles through Innovation'. Noramalina, an Academy of Brunei Studies Alumni, participated in the symposium’s textile exhibition. The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and former Director of the Academy of Brunei Studies, Dr Siti Norkhalbi Haji Wahsalefelah, was also present at the symposium. Brunei delegates also had the opportunity to take part in a study tour organised by the symposium at the following places: Makam raja-raja Jawa; Batik Workshop at Imogiri 3; the Batik Apipas Gallery; Candi Borobudur; the Ullen Museum; the Batik Jawa Gallery; and Studio DOWA.
