MIB Corner Added to Brunei Studies Collection, UBD Library

The Academy of Brunei Studies successfully launched the Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) or Malay Islam Monarchy Corner in the Brunei Studies Collection of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam Main Library.

The MIB Corner was a concerted effort by five Academy of Brunei Studies' final year students with the support and cooperation of the Academy of Brunei Studies itself, UBD Library and the Secretariat Office of the MIB Supreme Council and consists of around 900 publications in the form of books, magazines, newspaper clippings and multimedia such as videos pertaining to MIB.

Also available in the MIB Corner are two new books published in 2018 which are "Melayu Islam Beraja Dalam Sistem Pendidikan Negara Abad 21" written by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Awang Abu Bakar Haji Apong, issued by the Secretariat Office of the MIB Supreme Council and "Calak Bangsa: Brunei Kekal sebagai Negara Melayu Islam Beraja Kerana Brunei Tetap Mengekalkan Pegangannya Yang Kuat Kepada Ajaran Islam" written by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Awang Othman, issued by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Negara Brunei Darussalam.

The establishment of the MIB Corner was supervised by Pg Dr Khairul Rijal Pg Haji Abdul Rahim, lecturer at Academy of Brunei Studies with the aim of providing a user-friendly facility for students, researchers and the general public who wish to further understand and explore the Malay Islamic Monarchy concept. By establishing the corner, it would certainly give visitors the opportunity to find information related to MIB easily and quickly.

"MIB is an essential part of Brunei Darussalam and needs to be instilled in all Bruneians as their identity and pride of the nation," Project Manager Mohd Fadzli Hussin said during the launching ceremony. "The establishment of the MIB Corner is one of the ways that we can help the nation truly embody and practice the values of MIB."

Present as the guest of honor to officiate the MIB Corner was Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pendikar Alam Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Hasrin Dato Paduka Awang Haji Sabtu, Member of the Legislative Council. Also present during the opening ceremony were Senior Special Duties Officer at the Secretariat Office of the MIB Supreme Council, the Director of Academy of Brunei Studies, the Chief Librarian of UBD Library, lecturers, officers and staff of UBD Library.

The MIB Corner is also in line with one of the strategic action plans of the Secretariat Office of the MIB Supreme Council which aims to further disseminate information on MIB to the general public. Therefore, it is hoped that the MIB Corner in UBD as a pioneer will garner further support and encourage the establishment of similar MIB Corners in other educational institutions throughout the country in the near future.

From primary schools to institutions of higher learning, MIB is a subject embedded in the curriculum and co-curriculum on every level of education in Brunei Darussalam. The module PB-1501: Melayu Islam Beraja is compulsory to be taken by UBD undergraduates. The valuable collection in the newly launched MIB Corner will surely be of great benefit to them as well as others who are interested to know more about the national philosophy.
