  • Position: Professor

Professor Dr OOI Keat Gin

BA Ed. (Hons) (Universiti Sains Malaysia), MA (National University of Singapore), PhD (Southeast Asian Studies) (University of Hull)

OOI Keat Gin’s scholarly interest of the island of Borneo dates back some four decades when he first stepped on Bornean soil, initially Kuching, Sarawak, thence to Simunjan in the Middle Sadong River. In the vicinity of the Sadong, specifically then known as the Nonok peninsula (currently Asiajaya), was a hive of communist activities throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His initial curiosities were of the Sadong environs, Serian and onwards to urban Kuching. With both his tertiary degrees focusing on the Brooke Rajahs (1841-1941) and British colonial period (1946-1963) of Sarawak, post-doctoral research on the Pacific War and Imperial Japan’s military occupation (1941-1945) that extended to North Borneo (presently Sabah), Brunei, and thereafter a crossover to Dutch Borneo and post-independent Indonesia Kalimantan. All in all, frightening upon hindsight, he had spent several decades of his academic career on Borneo across all its political component territories, namely the present-day Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, the Sultanate of Brunei, and Indonesia Kalimantan.

Beyond Borneo, his varied scholarly interests extend to exploring mid-sized urban centres inter alia George Town, Penang; Phuket town on Phuket, southern Thailand; Siem Reap, Cambodia. Historiography is another preoccupation likewise his penchant for uncovering source materials in aiding the reconstruction and reinterpretation of the past. Hand in hand with historiography is his concern for the teaching and learning of history at the secondary and tertiary level, and also in the public sphere. Although not intending to go to the extent of becoming a public intellectual, his writings and publications to some extent contribute in the shaping of how history is being communicated to the youth and the-man-in-the-street.

Two foci of his attention in recent years have been on international history and biography. Both are at best in the exploratory stage of development. His expressed intention is to explore Borneo in the context of its relations and interactions with other territories in immediate proximity as well as those beyond. Attempting a biography of a historical personality is another challenge that he is keen to embark.

Prior to his current appointment as Professor of the Modern History of Brunei/Borneo, he was Professor of History of Malaysia/Southeast Asia at the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia. Until his mandatory retirement in 2019, he was Coordinator of the Asia Pacific Research Unit (APRU-USM), and founding-editor-in-chief (2005-2019) of the Scopus-indexed International Journal of Asia Pacific Studies (IJAPS).
